Kaito KA1101 AM/FM Shortwave Radio, Black

Very good super-portable stater level am/fm/sw radio from Kaito, Kaito/Degen has done it again! I needed a small AM/FM/SW radio for travel and have compared several including the Kaito KA1105, the Kaito KA11, the Kaito 1102, the Grundig G6, the Grundig YB-550PE, the CCRANE SWP (Redsun RP300), the Tecsun PL-450, etc. I am still not done with all my evaluations, but I definitely think that the Ka1101 is a great small and very inexpensive ($~55-60 depending on the vendor) and a very excellent receiver! The identical radio is available in both silver and very dark gray/black. I am extremely impressed right out of the box how well it performs even for quite weak signals and with the antenna on SW not even extended.

    PROS:

    1) Comes with rechargeable batteries, velcro-sealed slip case, earbuds, long antenna wire, adapter/charger and very readable manual (which fits nicely inside of the supplied slip case!). Batteries are designed to be easily recharged inside the radio.

    2) Excellent weak signal reception on ALL bands including Low frequency FM or FML (starting at 70 MHz). It really performs very well!

    3) Excellent bandwidth choice for the Wide/narrow switch on the keyboard on AM (MW) and SW and a separate FM, FML tone switch (labeled as Music/news on the right hand side of the radio), a Mono/Stereo switch on the keyboard as well as a Local/DX switch on the left hand side of the radio.

    4) Lock switch and external antenna jack.

    5) Back light controlled by available ambient lighting with an on-board light sensor system.

    6) Numerous tuning methods available.

    7) Very high quality and very readable display with numerous icons for charging, battery life, Mono/stereo settings, wide/narrow filter setting, etc.

    8) Very long battery life.

    9) Simple direct system for changing the 5 individual bands in direct order only (no reversing of the band change direction is possible).

    10) Finally, it has a nice and very easy to use reset button on the front panel just in case the system acts irregularly (which I have not observed at all).
Kaito Quality Control, After reviewing many radios, I decided because of its price to go with the Kaito. When I received the radio I tried to charge the batteries- one battery refused to charge in a powerex charger. I tried a refresh with no luck. I replaced this battery with a Panasonic that was fully charged. As I opened the battery compartment lid, it fell off. I used tape to hold it on. I could not stand the moth ball smell of the nicely designed case so I threw it away.
Performance is poor. I live in a fringe area and did not expect miracles, but this radio does not come close to pulling in stations that were a breeze with the CC Radio. The DX switch is a joke-it is there for cosmetics. It did nothing! Shortwave is a silkscreen label-not a fact.Kaito KA1101 AM/FM Shortwave Radio, Black
Ergonomics: The buttons are poorly designed. The on-off switch is flush
with the case and almost impossible to activate by touch.

  • Compact design, ideal for travelling
  • Built-in automatic battery charger, alarm clock and sleep timer
  • 1-year USA limited warranty
  • Four tuning methods: direct, manual, scan and preset
  • Dual conversion technology + wide/narrow AM filter + 50 memories

Kaito Electronics, Inc. Voyager Trek Emergency Radio with Water-Resistant Rubberized Finish, in Green

Lovely expensive flashlight, horrible radio, There are lots of nice conveniences here: the flashlight and the hand crank charger being among my favorites--as well as the emergency cell phone charger. But the radio (it has a SW band..one of the little bonuses that landed this unit on my wish list) is just horrible. Not merely weak, but bad. Selectivity is the worst I've ever encountered. Stations you'd expect to find on any car radio do not appear one minute, then appear the next. The tuning dial is utterly useless and inaccurate. Some stronger stations 'repeat' down the dial in intervals. The tuner drifts off frequency. AM stations come in poorly. SW is too weak to tune in any stations at all. The WX frequency works well, however. Given the hand crank charger, the flashlight and the phone charger, this is a cute little novelty. But the radio is abysmal. A toy, nothing more.
Junk, Junk, Junk!!!, (What's this?) I think the headline sums it up, nicely. But I have 20 more required words, so I'll elaborate - this looks and feels like a toy. The "reception" is non-existent (and forget the SW - you might get 2 stations on a good day). The light is too dim to be useful, and the antenna broke within a few days of normal use. The Eton FR160 is a less-expensive and highly-superior alternative. Avoid this piece of garbage. You want to save money and disappointment? I'd definitely go that route - get the Eton FR160. You'll be happy you did.
Expected a bit more for the money., (What's this?) When I received the item, I noted it is sturdy. I expected a bit larger item for the money and I should have paid attention to the measurements.

The radio is not good. The sound is fuzzy and it's so small that finding a station is difficult and the dial is touchy. It has neat gadgets on it and it's really good for the weather station. For finding other stations on FM, not so good. The signal has to be very strong in order for this radio to pick it up. Hopefully your favorites are strong. I found two AM stations and can barely hear them...too much fuzz. I live in a well populated area with access to all kinds of stations. It's not like I'm in a rural area somewhere. What would happen if I tried to take this camping. I wouldn't hear a thing. I had transistor radios when I was a kid that were way cheaper and better than this.

The flashlight would be handy in a blackout even though it's not REAL strong. But $40 bucks for a flashlight is silly. I still can get the weather station nice and strong which is one reason I bought the thing. I was thinking about returning it and spending a bit more to get something that actually works well. I haven't decided.
Voyager Emergency Radio, (What's this?) Price was lowest I could find on the web. The radio is as advertised. It is neat that it works on so many different power sources.
Emergency radio, (What's this?) I purchased this for use in my emergency kit I carry in my car. With all of the severe weather lately I feel much better knowing I have access to more than just local radio stations as with other emergency radios. It is fairly well constructed and should, with appropriate care, last quite a while. The additional features of the flashlight, solar charging, and crank charging add to the overall value.
A real working emergency radio, worth of it !, I bought this radio just want to see how it is built, because I have a handful of radios from different brands. This is not , of course , the first kaito radio.

The first glimps of this radio is strong and well built, the plastic used on this radio is good and the color is true, not a painted , a real plastic, so the color is shining from material,I like it.

The reception on all bands are on the same track of the radios from kaito , clear and loud. I did not have a chance to test the battery yet, but it looks ok. The solar panel produces the juice just to power the radio well.I believe that this radio is better than other similar because of the battery compartment, it take 3 AAA batteries as well, so you can use regular battery to run the radio.

I like the flashlight, it is a good one with 5 LEDs, bright and easy to push on an off.

The USB ports are easy for al my electronic gadgets, and it works well on charging my phones, it seems the current that pumped out is not too bad, it charges the HTC and Samsung Galaxy S well.

I give it a 5 star, I do not see any other emergency radios better in features than this.

ETON G5 AM/FM/Shortwave Portable Radio with SSB (Single Side Band)

It's a fine Little radio with great sound quality., I wanted a radio to listen to 40 meter CW traffic. It does all of that and more. We have several other radios in the house, but even my wife looks for this one when she's ready to exercise. It has great sound for such a small radio and picks up AM & FM broadcast stations we couldn't hear on our other radios. It's the only one we have that picks up shortwave, so I have nothing to compare. But I am amazed at the amount of traffic I get on the upper side band of 40 meters. Due to its size, it is the most portable radio we own. It comes with everything I need. It isn't really what I would call an alarm clock radio, but you could use it as such. Or you can set it to come on at a time when you know there will be traffic you would like to listen to or a radio program. There is a pretty good manual with it to guide you through all the functions. It comes with an AC power adapter which doubles as an internal battery charger for your 4 AA rechargeable batteries. It also has earbuds, a protective case for the radio and an external long wire antenna with a jack for it on the radio. I haven't tried the long wire because I don't feel I need it. The adjustable whip antenna extended to around 20 inches works for me on shortwave.

This little radio has quite a following on the internet and there is a place that will work on the front end of the receiver to increase receiver sensitivity. I personally don't think the radio needs the $60 mod but others are happy with it. This radio is out of production at this time and has been replaced by the G3/E3. I didn't want to spend the money for a new E3 and looked around for a cheaper E5. I found mine in new/other condition on a well known internet auction site.
Now a classic radio for some, My Grundig YB-400 had been working so well that I just did not get this radio in the begining. Got the tiny pocket Grundig G6 instead which has been loads of fun. However when the Grundig G5 went on clearance at Radio Shack for $35 I just had to have one. Make that two (one for me one for my wife). RadioShack had a coupon for $10 off a $40 purchase so I got enough rechargable batteries to hit the $40 price and then ended up getting the Grundig G5 and the batteries for $30. Now that I am familiar with the G5 I almost feel like I stole the radio. The G5 is considerable smaller than the YB-400 and sounds almost as good. The G5 sounds much better and has better reception than the Sony 7600G and the G6. The Sony 7600G has the edge in clear SSB listening and the occasional clearing up of a signal with the Sony's Sync Detector. Unless you need a pocket radio I would definately pick the G5 over the G6. The G5 is still very compact and travels well. Speaker is loud enough to comfortably fill hotel rooms. The G5 ergonomically leaves the Sony 7600G in the dust with a much better backlit screen, backlit buttons, push button volume, hundred of presets organized 7 to a page that can be labeled with 4 letters, tunning knob, quiet AC adapter, 3 event alarms that can be set to any station any volume and any combination of days of the week. The YB-400 is now rarely used due to the G5 superiority.
extremely disappointing!, (What's this?) I recently received the Grundig G-5 and immediately sent it back. Although I've had and seen this radio perform well, this one was extremely poor. The AM was very disappointing. Local stations came in like I was in a parking garage. The FM had a lot of bleed over.
Radio, (What's this?) Not what I expected. I am located in the Caribbean and I am not able to get much short wave stations.
Great radio, (What's this?) Its a great little radio. Normal alkaline batteries (AA) don't last very long. Have a similar radio from radio shack that uses 2 C batteries and that better battery life. However this radio can use rechargable batteries and plugging in the AC adapter recharges them. Havent tried that feature yet.
You can save tons of preset stations but its a little cumbersome changing the station.
great radio, lousy vendor, (What's this?) The radio works well with the exception that it does not receive SW off of the whip antenna.
SW works great on an external long wire.
SSB is very good. I am listening to Puerto Rico at the moment and it hears the signal as well as my $500 Satellit 800.
    AM is excellent
    FM is good

This unit was bought new. It wasnt. The display was all scratched up.
    It came from TS Liquidators?

I would have sent it back, but the RF performance is so good on it that I decided to buff out the display myself rather than return it.

Also I think the narrowband filter is a bit to narrow.
Shortwave solves reception and give great sound, (What's this?)
Doesn't measure up, First of all, let me say, I am not an expert or radio junkie, I just want to listen to decent sound on the local FM stations, so take my comments based on that. I had an Eton before this radio and it was a great little trooper, I loved the devil out of it. It eventually bit the dust and they had stopped making it so I bought the Grundig as it appeared to be a similar replacement. Well, the speakers were never great and now, TWO YEARS LATER, it gave up the ghost!!! Maybe I got a lemon but I'll never buy another Grundig again.
Excellent FM reception with Terrific Sound., While i was living in the Navajo Nation, AZ i bought the Grundig Buzz Adrin version at Radio Shack. the FM reception was horrible. I contacted Eton and they recommended trading in for the G5 which i did. What a difference! FM was loud and clear from KNAU Flagstaff . The audio from this little guy is fantastic. The newer G3 is exactly the same with the addition of an AUX jack which the G5 does not have.

HIGHLY recommend this unit and NOT the Buzz Aldrin one.
Kaito 1103 v. Grundig G5, After three years I just couldn't take the Kaito's two step volume control anymore...it's truly ridiculous. I had been looking at the Grundig (G3, actually, as I think all radios should have a line-in feature, for mp3 use) as a replacement. There was a "price-break" and I ended up buying the wrong radio in a hurry...who could remember that the G3 is actually a more sophisticated version of the G5? Not me. There is still a 50 dollar premium for just one feature (unless you listen to aircraft band), i.e., the line-in, which I think is silly.

Anyway, against a three year old 1103, the G5 has significantly better FM reception, a nicer (crisper, more dimensional) sounding speaker, and better ergonomics.

    What I don't like about the G5:
Signal meter does not function for FM
Clock is a barely readable, anemic display
Function button, memory recall system a little lame (the 1103 really shines here)
Rubbery finish too tacky, creepy, attracts grease
General appearance uberFUNCTIONAL, not very stylish nor clever.
    Kinda flimsy, in hand

    I use it every day.

Sony ICF-SW35 Digital Tuning World Band Receiver

instructions manual, (What's this?) I recently got it but without instructions manual. Do not know how to use it.
An Excellent Simple AM/FM/Shortwave Receiver, This little radio Sony ICF-SW35 Digital Tuning World Band Receiver is an excellent starter or second shortwave receiver. It is also an excellent portable AM/FM radio. Like most Sony radios, its music sound quality is, frankly, just adequate, but for listening to news and talk, which is what most shortwave listeners do, its sound quality is really fine and very clear.

The radio has very few features. For example, it has no direct-entry keypad, nor does it receive SSB (Single-Sideband) transmissions used by Hams. It is strictly for listening to local and world broadcasts. Some may regard this as somewhat of a liability but, for one just starting to use a shortwave receiver, this relative lack of complicated features can be a boon. And remember it is not features that make a receiver good or bad but, rather, performance.

And it is in performance that this Sony radio really shines.

It is quite sensitive using its telescopic whip antenna and it is very selective. (Adding a $15.00 wind-up antenna Sangean ANT-60 Short Wave Antenna, clipped to the whip antenna, improves reception, though it's not absolutely necessary.) Its image rejection characteristic (the ability to ignore harmonics of radio signals which can interfere with the true station on the frequency to which you are tuned) is, in a word, superb, better than that of any other compact shortwave receiver. Its overall reception performance is at least equal to or, in the overwhelming majority of cases, is actually superior to that of most shortwave receivers costing up to $150.00.

While others have written here that it is difficult to learn to operate this radio, in actual fact, it is not. You must read the instructions. Sometimes you have to re-read them. Many people just will not do this - and, for them, the radio, especially the usage of its memories, will indeed be difficult. But for those of us who do read manufacturers' instructions, there will be absolutely no problem operating this receiver to full advantage and learning how to do it very quickly. Literally, a child, or even a very old person, can do it. It's that simple to learn and use.

It is manufactured in China. Most Chinese-built radios, for example, Degen/Kaito, Sangean, and Eton/Grundig models, have variable quality control, mediocre in fact, more often than not.
Excellent (4.25 stars), simple, starter am/fm/sw SONY radio with 50 memories, I needed a relatively small AM/FM/SW easy to use starter radio to be used during travel and have compared several portable receivers including the Kaito KA11, Grundig G6 Aviator, Grundig YB-550PE, Grundig eTraveller VII, Kaito KA1101, Kaito KA1102 and the Eton E100, Redsun RP300 (Crane SWP), etc. I am still not completely done with all my evaluations, but I definitely think that the SONY ICF-SW35 radio is a great, very excellent receiver! I am extremely impressed right out of the box how well it performs even for quite weak signals with both very good sensitivity as well as selectivity.

    PROS:

    1) A dual conversion, PLL (Phase-locked loop), fully digital worldband radio that comes with a cloth slip case, carrying strap and a readable manual.
    2) Excellent weak signal reception on ALL bands (am/fm/sw). It really performs very well!
    3) It has a fine and useful tone switch (Music/news) with stereo through the earbuds as well as a continuously variable DX switch (RF gain attenuator). This "tone" switch works well on FM frequencies.
    4) Keyboard lock switch and backlight control (with 20 second duration with a yellow-green backlighting evenly illuminating the display).
    5) Three tuning methods are available including fine and coarse tuning (in 1 or 5 KHz steps) and including an automatic scanning tuning system with up/down search keys, but there is no direct frequency entry keypad, etc.
    6) Very high quality and very readable display with icons for indicating low battery life and a signal reception TUNE icon that works extremely well, etc. Clock time (indicated when the unit is off) and station frequency are not displayed simultaneously.
Did Short Wave not work or was there Rocket Science involved?, (What's this?) Radio recieved in good order. Appeard to be a solid piece of equipment.

The FM did not seem to bring in much in my small town with 20+ FM stations.

The memory sets were a pain to figure out, so was just setting the clock and such.

What I bought it most for was the Shortwave. It did not receive but some weather and one or two other SW signals. The manual completly stinks. It is a shortwave radio and has very little to no info on SW stuff. There are multiple SW bands, but it does not tell you nor can you easily figure out how to move about them.
Great product, (What's this?) I bought this radio for one of my customers and he was totally satisfied ! He has been telling me about it since. Not only does it sounds great but at home (Trinidad) it is twics as expensive.
Fair Radio with Tin Speakers, I've had my Sony SW35 for five years and while its reception is better than most analog radios and is not much bigger than a CD jewel case, I can't recommend it. First, its five layers of magazine presets are counterintuitive and require a lot of practice and constant references to the user manual. Second, the speaker is almost useless, a piece of tin that has no business being on a 75-dollar radio. Third, for the same price you can buy a far superior Degen 1103 or its clone the Kaito 1103, which has a better speaker and stronger reception. If you want to spend a little less and get good reception with an analog instead of the more expensive digital you might take a look at the Tecsun BCL 2000, or its more expensive clone, the Grundig S350. I've tried many radios, own several, and can assure you that for digital PLL synthesized dual-conversion radios, you can't beat the Degen 1103 or its twin the Kaito 1103 (both around 65-100 dollars depending on where you buy them).
It was rather fair product, (What's this?) It's happened that the radio arrived when it was in our aria snow storm.
SW channels are hard to tune, (What's this?)

    Coby CXCB91 9 Band AM/FM ShortWave Radio

You get what you pay for...., This radio is obviously what you are supposed to get for the price. It works but has somewhat bad reception, it seeems like he just likes to work on some spots. Also, the case is opening in two pieces....
Turned on by itself, (What's this?) Turned itself on without warning. Had to remove batteries to stop it. Fix that problem and it would be a fair value.
    Caveat Emptier!,
If it says COBY, it's crap. Kind of.

COBY is a substandard brand of electronics, manufactured in the P.R.C. In most cases, more trouble than its worth.

However, if you REALLY need a certain electronic device, like YESTERDAY and don't have the case or credit, then COBY may be for you.

Be prepared for below average performance. Returns and repairs. If your lucky you'll get one that you like and gives you no problems. If not, well...you've read the other reviews.

So long story short. I will purchase several small emergency radios within the next several months. This COBY will be one of them. It will be the the low man on the totem pole. But hey, you never know.
    avoid!, pros:
    its cheap (I paid $12).
    cons:
it doesn't have digital tuning (there's a tuning knob on the side). no battery life indicator. cannot save presets. reception is poor.
Exactly what I wanted, (What's this?) It is exactly what I wanted, a very lightweight radio for hiking. It weighs almost nothing and is a great addition to my hikes. It is not a world class receiver, but it is well worth the $10 I paid for it. It receives everything I want to. FM is great but AM it can only receive close stations. SW so far so good. Just know what you are buying, it is a $10 radio and it is worth every penny. The clock and alarm work fine. Build quality is acceptable considering the price. Runs forever on a pair of NiMH batteries. Happy I bought it.
Good AM Reception, Very Low Power Consumption, What's good:
The best judge of a product is whether it is used, and mine is used every day. I've owned this little Coby for a couple of years now and it keeps me entertained every night listening to talk radio on the AM band. For night listening I tend to keep it under my pillow thanks to its low profile. I keep low volume so I don't wake up my wife. No need to deploy the antenna for AM listening. The battery seems to last all week, even if I fall asleep and it plays all night. The radio is analog-tuned using a knob on the right side, and has a simple digital readout of the station frequency. I am sure it is the lack of modern digital circuits that avoids quickly draining the batteries.

    What's bad:
    1) The base of the unit is too narrow and the plastic is not perfectly flat so if you try to stand it up it can tip over easily. I end up keeping it laying down on my night stand or under my pillow. 2) It is supposed to have an alarm but the wake-to-music doesn't work. 3) I have some strong FM stations nearby and this and similar radios cannot pick up any FM stations. Only expensive home or car radios work in my area. I did not have any luck picking up any short-wave stations either, though I had fun trying. I kind'a picked up Austria once on a Dx bounce but nothing reliable.

    The Verdict:
Buy this radio to help you get to sleep, listening to the AM band. For a few bucks, I did end up using it regularly, and this little Coby did inspire me enough that I am now looking around to buy a high end SW radio.
This Radio Was A Good Receiver, But Did Not Last Long, (What's this?) When I first got, I was happy that I got it along time ago. I opened the package and put 2 AA batteries in and started tuning around with it. During the day the frequencies were quite limited and I was lucky to hear some stations on the 19 meter band, the frequency range was the 49 Meter band to the 15 meter band, it did receive alot of shortwave signals on the 49 meter band. The one thing that is lacking is the 25 meter band 11.0 to 13.0 MHz, the 60 meter band 4.0 to 6.0 MHz. It's a very good portable shortwave radio to keep around and use for bandscanning.

MW - 514 to 1726 kHz - AM Broadcast Band
    SW 1 - 5.47 to 6.69 MHz - 49 meter band
    SW 2 - 6.69 to 7.57 MHz - 41 meter band
    SW 3 - 8.37 to 9.50 MHz - 32 meter band
    SW 4 - 9.52 to 10.88 MHz - 31 meter band
    SW 5 - 13.08 to 16.45 MHz - 19 meter band
    SW 6 - 14.85 to 18.40 MHz - 16 meter band
    SW 7 - 19.99 to 23.65 MHz - 15 meter band
FM - 87.30 to 108.8 MHz - FM Broadcast Band

I would highly recommend that you get a wire antenna for this radio to receive shortwave radio signals. The disadvantage is the AM band, someone in China did not tune the AM band properly so signals on 10 kHz is 15 kHz which means that 790 kHz is 795 kHz, 1050 kHz is 1055 kHz. The FM band works really good, but it does receive most local signals, but 100.5 FM is bleeding some parts of the band.

This shortwave radio is a great starter radio, but I would recommend you get a real shortwave radio with continous coverage. This radio only receives strong and weak shortwave signals on the assigned international broadcast bands. If you use a wire antenna you will not have a problem receiving signals from all over the world.

UPDATE : I was using the radio to tune FM stations after replacing the batteries, then the knob started coming loose and stopped tuning. I opened it up and found out that the
string came off the wheel. This happened with the second one before, this is terrible
why it came loose. It was a good radio receiver, I don't know if I will buy another one. Please come up with a different tuning configuration and then I'll think about it
it's not a dial type radio, you don't need strings attached.
"POWER OFF" SWITCH STOPPED WORKING 2ND DAY I HAD IT!, (What's this?) I purchased this and a couple of other pocket radios. This one was pretty nice and the sound quality was good. AM and FM tuning were very good to excellent. Shortwave was alright, missing some of the more used SW bands. The first night I listened to AM talk radio for a few hours then set the alarm to wake me up and turned it off.
coby 9 band radio, (What's this?) Excellent value for the price. I like the digital features and the fact it can be used as a digital clock radio. Well pleased with all aspects.
Poor quality, (What's this?) Purchased this radio and it worked only two days. I believe that this brand is of poor quality, so do not buy Coby brand items. On two occasions I had to discard products in this brand.

Etón American Red Cross ARCFR360R Solarlink Self-Powered Digital AM/FM/NOAA Radio with Solar Power, Flashlight and Cell Phone

perfect gift for mom ..., (What's this?) ... especially when she gets a snow storm and the power is out! she loves it, its compact, user friendly and she doesnt have to rely on her car for the phone charger! highly recommended.
Emrgeny equipment from Red Cross, (What's this?) This product is the best of other smaller items from the same Vendor from Red Cross Ceterfied Emergency Station. You can use it for a multile things, but what stands out is the solar and crank power source that even allows you to charge your cell phone outdoors away from any electric charging system. A must for all campers, hikers and emergency preparness etc....
Do Not Recommend - Very Poor Quality, I purchased this radio with expectations that it would work reasonable well. There have been constant problems with the quality and percision of the band selector and the power source selector. On the first radio I could not turn it off so the batteries would drain down. The second unit still have operational problems with band selection, brocasting, and power source selection. I contacted ETON and the representative that responded was very courtious and helpful and had me mail the defective unit back and a new replacement unit was sent. Again the ETON Company has a lack of quality control with these radios in the area of the Band selector and Power selector. I have been very dissatified and it was not worth the money. Buy something else such as a c.crane radio or a Grundig.
worst radio I ever owned, I bought this radio from Radio Shack when I bought my new home. I only live 45 miles from NYC, about 50 miles from Philly and less than 40 from Allentown, PA... all with MAJOR SUPER STATIONS... and yet this piece of junk can't tune anything in... and on the rare occasion when it did, it would fade quickly.

what else can I say about a radio with VERY poor reception?
It is, without a doubt, the worst radio I have ever owned.
I would try to seell it on ebay.... but I don't want rip of anyone...
so I put in the trunk of my car to use as a flashlight.
Worked as Needed for Hurricane Irene, (What's this?) I purchased this with overnight shipping before Hurricane Irene because all of the stores were sold out of these types of radios. It was delivered to my house just in time and I got a lot of use out of it since I lost power!

There are a lot of negative comments about the build quality of this radio. I don't think it feels that cheap. It's certainly not as durable as a professional grade radio. It's not water proof and it is not shock-proof; if you dropped it on pavement from above 5 or 6 feet you are liable to break at least one part of this radio. It works great as an emergency radio to keep in your home or bring camping. It's not that great as a true survival radio, and you should not expect this radio to be of that quality since it is less than $100.

The only true flaw I see in the build quality of a radio of this price range is that the crank is plastic...I wish it were metal.

Speaker quality is good enough. Reception was as good as my car radio. Three power options is great to have as well. The radio is very portable.

As some reviewers noted, the cell phone charging feature will ONLY work while you are using the hand crank..it will NOT charge off of battery power. I was able to charge my smart phone with this (HTC EVO 3D).

Didn't test the solar charging..my guess is that it probably takes a while to charge since the solar cell is very small on this radio.
weather radio, (What's this?) love this radio my son wanted it for christmas and found the best price at amazon.
worthless, I just purchased this thinking it would be great in emrgency weather situations, etc.
Review of Eton ARCFR360R, (What's this?) First off, the size and weight are good. I bought the unit for the variety of power options and all deliver quite well. The radio tunes well and has good reception. I believe that it should have come with an AC adapter and a USB to micro USB power adapter. The unit does not have a fragile feel, but I don't know how well it would do falling more than a few feet. Overall I like it and would buy one again.
Very pleased, (What's this?) Item arrived quicker than expected and is everything that we in the listing. We are very pleased with this transaction.
Worse. Radio. Ever., I would give it no stars if I could. I wish this radio could give me stars back.
Where to begin? Well, let's begin with the main purpose of the unit- an emergency radio. The weather band sucks. Never could get it to pick up the weather. Shortwave really sucks because there isn't any. On an emergency radio. AM and FM work ok with strong stations but the channel presets would never stay preset. Every time it was turned on, the presets were gone.
You won't have to worry about doing too much else if this is your radio during an emergency- you'll be too busy having to babysit this stupid thing to do anything else. Even in the middle of summer on a cloudless day, the solar 'charger' would only keep the radio running if it was directly pointed at the sun, outside. If the unit was shielded from the sun by clear poly-carbonate or by glass, it would immediately shut down. Not low-E quadruple pane internally tinted architectural glass either, I'm talking about a single pane of untreated bare glass.

Sportline Walking Advantage Mini Ear Radio

No Volume control, (What's this?) I puchered three of these thinking I could use them at the football game. They dont tell you in the ad that they DONT HAVE VOLUME CONTROL! It would be great for Walking of which its intent is, but I used it for One football game and the batterys went deed.
Piece of junk, DON'T ORDER!!!,   | PermalinkComment Comment

3.0 out of 5 stars Mini Ear Radio, Very light and comfprtable to wear. No volume control is a weak feature. Sound is OK. Only good for listening to strong local stations. Since it only fits in 1 ear, there is obvioulsy no stereo. Cute little gadget.
Not a good idea to get this!, (What's this?) Mine hasn't broken - yet. But I already don't like it. How can you possibly create a radio with no volume control? And the reception is bad. Oh, did I mention that you pretty much need two hands to change the station? Bottom line: this won't win any awards in the areas of sound or design. Price, maybe. But you really do get what you pay for in this case. Don't say we didn't warn you.
Broken in two days!, EXTREMELY disappointed in this product! 1. No volume control, 2. The very thin antenna wire broke off on the second day -- and I only wore it twice for 30 minutes walking the dog in the morning.

I have now ordered a Lobeman. At least it has a two position volume control. I would never have ordered the Sportline product if I'd known there was no volume adjustment.

Sportline should add a rubber flex boot for a quarter inch or so where the antenna wire passes through the case so that this isn't such a terrible and immediate point of failure.
Ear fm radio doesnt work!, (What's this?) I received the Sportline Walking Advantage Mini Ear Radio today. I was wanting it to listen to FM as I worked out at the "Y". It is absolutely a worthless piece of junk. There is no volumn control...I couldnt hear very well when I did get a station There is no way to see what FM station you dial! ... and inside, I could not get a single station!!!...not even the FM sound from the big screen TVs placed in the room. At $8 bucks it wasnt worth returning to Amazon for my money back, but I hope anyone else considering ordering this worthless item will reconsider.
Sportline Walking Advantage Mini Ear Radio, Great little gadget. I used this with a FM transmitter plugged into my
Ipod which was hidden in a desk drawer at work. I could move around freely and not have the Ipod visible. I love the analog tuning. The lack of a volume control really didn't affect me. The ear clip, at least for me was the worst feature. I removed it and just stuck it in my ear. This seemed to work. The real bummer was that it is so small that I lost it. I have ordered 3 more to keep some as back-ups.
don't waste your money, the reception is NOT great. the ear piece is NOT comfortable. the dial is NOT sensitive.
Unhappy with product, (What's this?) Very unsatisfied with this product - the Sportline Walking Advantage Mini Ear Radio - it has no volume control and it does not stay tuned to any station. It drifts off to static. Replaced battery - still does the same thing.

Etón American Red Cross ARCFR160R Microlink Self-Powered AM/FM/NOAA Weather Radio with Flashlight, Solar Power and Cell Phone

microlink, (What's this?) I love this little device. Haven't used it much so I hope it holds out for a while. Never know if it's gonna break.
Asset to Have, But . . ., (What's this?) The other reviews are so detailed - excellent, but no one has mentioned it's case in relation to this item being solar-powered.
Great Radio, (What's this?) This thing works every place in my home. It's the first radio that has. The sound is great. I think you should buy it.
Never thought we'd have to use it..., (What's this?) ...but when wind knocked out power to our neighborhood for nearly 8 days, this was a lifesaver.
About that USB port, (What's this?) We purchased this just before Hurricane Irene hit the Northeast in August 2011. Although this radio provides a USB port and a means to charge your cell phone, you'll NEVER be using it as a cell phone charger unless you're desperate. Here's why... Instead of draining the battery of the device, you have to use the hand crank, even if the on-board battery is charged. You have to crank it about 120 cycles per minute or 2 Rotations per Second. I tried it for about a minute before my arms got tired realizing that I'd have to extremely desperate to charge my phone this way.

Other notes. We found the weather radio to be quite functional along with the flashlight and such. No complaints there.
Great little radio., (What's this?) This is a great little radio. The crank is comfortable on your hand & easy to crank. The only drawback of this radio is the so-called USB charger for phones. The instructions state that you can maybe get up to 1 minute of cell phone use charging a dead phone & that is hand cranking for 10 to 15 minutes! I suppose if you can get up to a minute in any emergency situation then it delivers as promised but don't expect to fully charge or get any where near fully charging a phone using this.

As a radio & flashlight this works great.
Emergency Radio, (What's this?) Thius is a great little necessity to keep for emergencies. I highly recommend this to anyone for there emergency kit. Can charge your phone in it also.
Good product so far, (What's this?) I bought this for my husband for his birthday a month ago, mostly to use in blackouts. We haven't had one in the past month, but he enjoys using it for the radio, which comes in very clear. We just have the radio sit in the window of the dining room where it gets sun all day long and it's always charged. This product was recommended to me and I thought the price was great.
Very well made, (What's this?) Much better than expected, and I'm happy overall with this purchase. Reception is good, flash light is bright, and battery life is very good. Charging iPod is a little tricky, though. You are supposed to turn the crank at a certain speed, and I do, but I can't seem to generate a steady output, and my iPod keeps popping up some errors. Cell phone may be easier.
Love it!, (What's this?) This device, to me, is too good a product to do without. I have recommended it to several friends and they have been impressed, as well. The radio reception has been good and the weather radio has worked very well. I use the light, briefly, virtually every night and the devise requires little winding to be serviceable. If you use the radio for a prolonged time, you'll know to wind it when the reception deteriorates. I'm VERY impressed with mine and plan to buy extras.
